Amazing Travel Discounts for anyone doing an Apprenticeship in Greater Manchester 😊

Did you know there are lots of travel discounts out there if you are doing an apprenticeship right now in Greater Manchester? Discounts cover bus, train, tram and free bikes!

System One travel card – for bus and tram for – all ages eligible

Providing that you are within the first 6 months of your apprenticeship, you can apply to receive four periods of free or discounted travel:

  • A free first 28-day period, saving you £120
  • A second 28-day period costing £25, saving you £95
  • A third 28-day period costing £50, saving you £70
  • A fourth and final 28-day period costing £75, saving you £45

The new ‘Our Pass’ scheme – covers bus travel for 16-18 year olds

If you are aged 16 to 18, and exclusively use the bus, the new ‘Our Pass’ scheme may be a better option than the System One travel card. This new pass, led by the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, gives 16 to 18-year olds free travel on buses for up to 2 years, with the only cost being a £10 administration fee.

This scheme is a two-year pilot, so take advantage now whilst you can!

Train Discounts – for 16-25 year olds

If you are aged 16-25 and travel by train to work, you can purchase a 16-25 railcard for £30 per year. The railcard gives 33% off most rail fares throughout Great Britain.

Another train option is to purchase Week/Month/Annual passes. These are relevant if you travel to and from the same two train stations.

Buying a week, month or annual ticket is cheaper than buying a ticket once per day. Usually, the longer your ticket is valid for, the cheaper (in the long run) your tickets will be. Use the National Rail Season Ticket Calculator to calculate how much money you could save.

Bike to Work Scheme – for all ages

If cycling to work is an option, you may be able to take advantage of the Apprentice Bike to Work scheme, which is organised by TFGM.

If you don’t have a bike, you can apply to receive a free refurbished bike, plus a free helmet, bike-lock, lights and a high vis jacket, all free as part of the scheme. All of these are free for you to keep after three months!

For further information on any of these discounted and free travel schemes please get in touch with the Apprentice Academy.

Good luck saving!
